Earth Day 3-2-1

What are three things you learned?
I learned the following:
  • That recycling makes cities cleaner.
  • That recycling makes the air cleaner by saving trees.
  • Everything you recycle gets turned into some thing els.
What are two things you found interesting?
  • Trees are homes to Adria's animals.(lol)
  • Adria's partner doesn't know how to spell tires.
What is one question you still have?
Where are there recycling bins in our community?

Group 29-Fuel Effiecent Cars

I made the slides 1,4,5, and 6.

Worst Weather Events

1. Which weather events kill the most Americans?
Flooding causes most wheater related deaths in the US.
2. Which weather events kill the most people (in the world)?
I would say hurricanes killed the most people in the world.
3. Are your answers to those two questions different? Why or why not?
Not very different b/c hurricanes can cause flooding but all flooding is not caused by hurricanes.
4. Read this article. Do you agree or disagree? Why or why not?
I strongly agree b/c for the most part you can prevent being trapped in a flood by evacuating and not driving into areas that are a;ready flooded.
5. For your response to #1, find three weather events. Describe what happened (how severe was the storm, did anyone get hurt or die, how much property damage, include pictures, etc.).
Destroyed homes, bridges and roadways in southwestern New Hampshire Sunday, and at least three people were dead and others are missing.

Another killed at least 98 people, an Austrian government aid package will channel $640 million in assistance to flooded areas.

Lastly $70 million, none hurt or killed.

4 Essential Questions

  1. What, specifically about your topic, are you going to research? I am going to research gas mileage, how to improve gas mileage and what impacts can higher or lower gas mileage can effect Earth.
  2. What conclusions did you come to? What do you recommend average citizens do to make a difference? Be specific. Drive Sensibly(not driving more aggressive), Observe the Speed Limit(don't drive over 60 mph), Remove Excess Weight(don't carry excess weight like if you have things in your trunk you don't need), Use Cruise Control(helps maintain highway speed);saves you money(more aware don't use as much spend less), reduces climate change(less CO2 in the air), reduces oil depedence costs(use less oil costs go down because less demand), increases energy sustainability(make a oil substitute faster).
  3. What would happen if, worst-case scenario, nobody listened to your recommendations? CO2 emissions would rise, ozone would depleat, Earth would get hotter, sea level would rise, cities would be underwater, economy from that city would be gone.
  4. What would happen if, best-case scenario, everybody listened to your recommendations? Everyone would start using renewable resources, ozone would reconstruct, polar ice caps wouldn't melt, Antarctica and Iceland would stay, Economy would stay.

Astronomy 2 Articles

"Finding Twin Earth is Harder than thought"
1. Which article did you read? "Finding Twin Earth is Harder than thought"
2. When was it published? This article was published Mar 21, 2009
3. What are 3 things you learned? .

  • There might be a planet just like Earth that we can live on.
  • The James Webb Space Telescope would be able to detect certain gases called biomarkers, such as ozone and methane, only for the closest Earth-size worlds.
  • If Earth were the size of a basketball, the atmosphere would be as thin as a sheet of paper.
4. What are 2 things you found interesting?
  • If Earth were the size of a basketball, the atmosphere would be as thin as a sheet of paper.
  • There might be a planet just like Earth that we can live on.
5. What is 1 question you still have? What planet is there that we can livew on that is just like Earth.

"Scientists Pinpoint 'Edge of Space' "
1. Which article did you read? "Scientists Pinpoint 'Edge of Space' "
2. When was it published? This article was published April 10, 2009.
3. What are 3 things you learned?
  • NASA has found the so-called edge of space.
  • Winds in space can reach speeds well over 1000 km/hr.
  • The edge of space is 118-kilometers above the ground.
4. What are 2 things you found interesting?
  • NASA has found the so-called edge of space.
  • Winds in space can reach speeds well over 1000 km/hr.
5. What is 1 question you still have? What would we use this information for. That is knowing where the edge of space is.

Astronomy Topics

  • Black holes-celestial body, strong gravity, invisible, time doesn't exist inside one, are the evolutionary endpoint of stars, after wards it could leave behind a massive burnout stellar remnant, will not have a chance of living, are prevalent in the universe, first composed in 1783, Albert Einstein brought it to a boom in 1915, masses 20-25 times that of the sun
  • Dark energy-I chose dark energy b/c i have no clue what it is and won't chose it b/c i can't find any info on it.
  • The Moon-It is the second brightest object in the sky. It orbits around the earth once per month. The moon controls the tides, it is Earths only natural satellite. The moon is a cold, dry orb whose surface is studded with craters and strewn with rocks and dust. The moon has no atmosphere.
  • Big Bang Theory-I chose this b/c i have heard of it and like the tv show and thats about it but is won't chose this one
  • Milky Way Galaxy-home of our solar system, galactic center, mass between 750 billion and one trillion solar masses, diameter about 100,000 light years, spiral galaxy, belong to local group, consist of over 400 billion stars, known as home, half a million miles per hr. (sun revolving around it), has a bulge, disc, and halo

Air Pressure Maps

1. Which area of the country currently has the fastest wind speeds? (city, state) How fast is it?
29 mph El Paso, TX
2. Which area of the state currently has the fastest wind speeds? How fast is it?
Raleigh,NC 20 mph
3. Which area of the country currently has the highest air pressure? (city, state) How high is it?
1021 Miami, Florida
4. Which area of the state currently has the highest air pressure? How high is it?
1012 Wilmington
5. Why does lower pressure usually bring bad weather?
Air flowing into an area of low pressure rises, making a counterclockwise spiral on the way in.
